If you’ve been meaning to get outside, Historic Germanna offers a simple place to start: a walk through Siegen Forest beside the Rapidan River.

You don’t have to make a whole day of it. Pick a stretch of trail, take someone along and see what catches your attention. The trails are open during daylight hours year-round, so there’s room to fit an outing around the rest of your day. Most begin near the Fort Germanna Visitor Center at 2062 Germanna Highway in Locust Grove. Plan your walk.

Start with a walk that suits you

The River/Red Trail brings together woodland, river views and traces of the area’s history, including an old millrace and Civil War earthworks.

There’s no need to tackle the whole route. Historic Germanna suggests walking to the one-mile marker and turning back for a two-mile outing. The full trail is about three miles one way, rather than a loop, so leave time and energy for the return. There are hills and uneven stretches; sturdy shoes are a good idea. Check the route before setting out.

Add a little history

If the visitor center is open, the museum and research library offer another way to get to know the place. Even the building has a connection to the story: its five-sided design recalls the original Fort Germanna.

Check opening arrangements before travelling, especially if you’d like to go inside. The center recommends calling 540-423-1700 ahead of a visit. Visitor center details.

Bring water, park in marked spaces and stay on the signed trails. There are no restrooms along the routes, and dogs need to be leashed.

That can be the plan: a little fresh air, a closer look at the river and something interesting to notice not far from home.
