Worth the Drive: Vintage Restaurant
By Malinda ·

At Vintage Restaurant in Orange, a historic manor house, a memorable meal, and a staff who made us feel like their only guests turned a short drive from Culpeper into an evening we didn’t want to end.

The food was wonderful. But it wasn’t the only reason we’re already looking forward to going back.

Historic character, thoughtful hospitality, and an evening worth lingering over, just beyond Culpeper.

Tim and I first visited Vintage Restaurant to celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary. I had come across it online, and dinner in a historic house sounded like our kind of evening. What I hadn’t expected was just how much we would love it. Sixteen minutes from our Culpeper home, we found a place we’re already excited to return to.

Vintage is at The Inn at Willow Grove in Orange, in a manor house whose history dates to 1778. We love historic buildings, and this one gave us plenty to admire before the first course arrived.

The brickwork, hand-hewn rafters, and fireplaces burning throughout the property made everything feel wonderfully cozy. Add the fall colors, and it was quite a setting for an evening out.

There is real style here, too. Blue upholstered chairs, striking artwork, and beautifully set tables bring a fresh personality to the old building. It’s the kind of combination I love: plenty of history, without feeling as though you’re having dinner in a museum.

A welcome that stayed with us

From the time I booked our reservation until my coat was returned at the end of the evening, the service was impeccable.

Every person we encountered greeted us by name and continued to throughout the evening, somehow making it feel like they were all there just for us!

That was what impressed me most. It wasn’t one particularly attentive server or a single thoughtful gesture. The entire staff was friendly, attentive, and intuitive about what we needed. They genuinely seemed to care about our experience.

They clearly have their systems down. But as a guest, you don’t spend the evening noticing a system. You notice how well you’re being looked after.

And then there was the food

Before the appetizers, a small course featuring crawfish arrived. I had never tried crawfish before, so this was a first for me. A delicious one, as it turned out, and a lovely way to begin the meal.

We shared the octopus and oysters as appetizers. Both were beautifully presented, and both were so good. The oysters arrived arranged over ice; the octopus was a plate worth pausing to admire before digging in.

For our main course, we both ordered that evening’s fresh catch, rockfish, served with cauliflower and other vegetables. From the first course through dinner, the food was unique, thoughtful, and absolutely delicious.

We’ve dined at quite a few restaurants in Washington, D.C., and I would put this meal above most of them. That’s how much we enjoyed it. Finding that experience so close to home made it even better.

A very good reason to linger

The staff brought us complimentary cherry ginger ice cream to mark our celebration. It was a thoughtful touch, and a delicious finish to the meal.

Except we weren’t quite finished.

We were both full, but neither of us wanted the evening to end. So we ordered port. We had never ordered port together before, which probably tells you more about the evening than another description of the food could.

We simply wanted to stay a little longer.

For those of us in Culpeper, this is exactly the sort of discovery that makes a short drive worthwhile. A beautiful historic setting, a sense of style, genuinely thoughtful hospitality, and food that made the whole evening feel special, all within easy reach of home.

Vintage was phenomenal. We left feeling that every part of the experience had been considered, and we really are looking forward to going back.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it for a special occasion. Although the next time we go, that occasion may simply be a day ending in “y.”
